I was devastated to hear about the passing of South African footballer Jayden Adams following the World Cup Football in the USA. While the circumstances surrounding such tragedies are often complex, his passing serves as a somber reminder to ask ourselves: Are we truly preparing our athletes for what happens when the show is over?
The lead-up to a major event like a World Cup is defined by intense purpose. Every day is governed by a plan, fuelled by energy, community support, and global hype. Athletes (and coaches) experience the surreal magic of standing on the world stage, often competing against the very heroes they idolised as children. It is a whirlwind of adrenaline and extreme highs.
However, once the competition ends, the “comedown” can be profound. Much like the aftermath of a trauma, the surge of adrenaline is replaced by deep fatigue and a sudden lack of motivation. Without a concrete plan for the “day after,” life can quickly feel gloomy, lonely, and uncertain. When we put young athletes on pedestals for their physical skills, we often forget to equip them with the life skills necessary to navigate these professional lows.
In my work with athletes, I advocate for a “Human First, Athlete Second” approach. We explore interests beyond the field and prepare for the “what ifs”—injury, non-selection, or retirement. By creating these options, we ensure that when a tournament ends, there is no empty void of hopelessness.
As coaches, therapists, and mentors, we must instil the realisation that they are more than their sport. We must normalise the fact that asking for help is an act of courage, not a sign of weakness.
A Call to Action for Mandela Day
In honour of Mandela Day on July 18th—a global call to give 67 minutes to social justice and community—I want to offer my support to our sporting community.
Jo Mountford from Per4m Mindset is hosting an online session to discuss “Post-Race Blues” and strategies for mental resilience. We invite any athlete who has felt this void, or those who support them, to join us.
